ReplyDeleteMaybe you needed to explain the dowry system a bit better so that others who read the post dont get strange ideas.
ReplyDeleteIts true that it is a really horrible system and it is practiced widely here. But then the reason it was initailly started wasn't wrong. It was natural for fathers to want to give their daughters as much as they wanted to, to ensure that they would be happy and not in need of anything in their marital homes. The problems started when the groom's family "expected" the gifts as a "right".
Thankfully, people are slowly growing aware of the evils of demanding dowry and changing gradually...for the better.

ReplyDeleteI think you are only expressing your anger using the words "tribal" and "canibal". Even in the literate Kerala, you and me know this is not a surprise. Especially among Christians and Muslims, though not in the tune of what they have in Andra Pradesh or in the North. I admire Malabar Hindus for the complete lack of dowry.
[fyi, Islam instructs a reverse dowry - Mahr - that the guy has to pay the gal and will be the gals private property. But these guys fool even God. In the Nikah paper, they will announce a name sake Mahr of a few thousand rupees and take the huge one under the table] And fyi, I dont belong to these Muslims who make fool of God! The dowry I took is my sweet wife:)
